Meet the Temple of the Tooth of Buddha
Also called Sri Dalada Maligawa, this is one of the most important pilgrimage in the country.There are houses one of the most important relics of Buddhism the canine left that belonged to Buddha. Thousands of devotees travel every day to appreciate this small piece of 2.5 cm that belonged to the important religious figure.
After Buddha’s death his body was cremated and his ashes were distributed around the world, and fell where magnificent temples were erected to honor this important figure.The left canine of the prophet came to Ceylon in some point of the fourth century BC, transported from India by Prince Danta and Princess Hemamala.
The tooth is one of the most important part of social life in the city of Kandy and around it celebrates one of the most important holidays of the country, carried out between July and August. It is 10 days in which Buddha is honored with elephants, dancing, food, fire and music, and is known as the Tooth of Buddha procession.
The temple and its surroundings were declared World Heritage Site in 1988 and despite the bombings and attacks throughout its history now stands in near mint condition. It is recalled that in 1998 an attack by the Tamil Tiger guerrillas and only temple that houses the tooth survived.
